Pilgrimage to Knock
The annual Ardagh and Clonmacnois Diocesan Pilgrimage to Knock takes place on Sunday 7 September. Ceremonies begin at 2.30pm with the Anointing of the Sick and Mass will be celebrated at 3.00pm. CROSS rugby legends Charity 5k Run/Jog/Walk in aid of Cancer Research this Sunday 31 August in The Mall Complex Longford. Registration from 10am run starts at 11am. Entry fee €10.00 for adult and €5.00 per child. Everyone is welcome. The event is organized to raise funds for the CROSS Cancer Research Charity in Trinity College and St. James Hospital.
The Lakelands Area Retreat and Cancer Centre Multyfarnham are holding their annual church gate collection on Saturday and Sunday, 30 and 31 August at all masses in Granard. The centre gives support and holistic help to people living with cancer providing a supportive environment where patients and family members can participate in courses obtain information and experience complementary therapies. How about a “LIFT OFF” Interest Free Education Loan? The cost of gaining a Third Level Education is very high yet so beneficial for the future career prospects of an individual. Getting the money together to go to college is an enormous problem for a lot of low income households. The immediate costs of deposit for accommodation and registration fees make it an impossible dream for many especially those from welfare dependent families. Longford Community Resources Ltd. the County LEADER and Partnership Company, in conjunction with the Department of Social Protection are very aware of the difficulties and have made available a 3rd Level Education Loan Scheme to assist students from welfare dependent families access third level education. The idea behind the loan is that students can get the money to pay the deposit on a house or apartment and pay registration fees as soon as they get their place in college. The money can be paid back out of their maintenance grant when it comes through or by affordable weekly repayments. This, together with maintenance grants will give those most in need a lift off. In this way the fund revolves and will be available annually. This is an ideal opportunity for you or your children to look at 3rd Level Education as an affordable opportunity and to improve their career prospects and life choices.
This education loan will allow for students from welfare dependent families to get funding in September to secure accommodation and other immediate expenses so that struggling families will not be even more pressurised. The loan is being administered by Longford Community Resources Ltd. and a criteria for eligible applications exists. The main criteria is that the applicant must be 1st year student in 3rd Level and qualify for Full Maintenance Grant with Top Up. Walk on Coals
Local lady, Bernadine Farrelly will take part in an unusual event in Drummin Westport Co. Mayo this weekend Saturday, 30 August when she will walk on coals. She chose the event in order to raise funds for Lus na Greine FRC Centre Counselling Services. Your donations and sponsorship will be appreciated.

Sympathy is extended to Kathleen Reynolds and family, Miriam, Philip, Emer, Leonie, Albert, Cathy and Andrea his grandchildren, brother Jim, sister Teresa; his sons-in-laws; daughters-in-laws relatives and many friends of the late Albert Reynolds former Taoiseach who died peacefully at his home in Dublin on 21 August. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday in the Church of the Sacred Heart Donnybrook followed by burial in Shanganagh Cemetery. May he rest in peace.
