Tragic death of Lisa Cullen
We were all shocked and deeply saddened when news broke of the death of Lisa Cullen, Lisduff, Edgeworthstown following a car crash on the main Longford- Kenagh road last week. Lisa, who was only in her late ‘twenties, had been working in Ballymahon Credit Union for just the last few weeks and many locals had got to know her in that short space of time, she was a lovely, courteous and mannerly young girl who got on well with everyone. She was also an Irish Dancing Teacher. We offer our sincere sympathy at this very sad time to Lisa’s parents, brothers, relatives and many friends. May she rest in peace.

Death of John Donlon
It was with deep regret that we learnt of the death last week of John Donlon, Derryhaun, Kenagh after a long illness at the age of 75. John, who is pre-deceased by his son Dermot, was a former Fianna Fail Councillor for South Longford where he served the people so well. He was a great character, a hard-worker and a very friendly gentleman. John had a word for everyone. He was a regular visitor to Ballymahon and made many friends here down the years. John of course will always be remembered as being one of Longford’s greats in the football scene, having played on the 1966 team who won the National Football League title. He also played with Longford in 1968 when they won the Leinster Senior football championship. Hundreds of people called to the Donlon home last week where John’s remains lay in repose to pay their last respects, it brought back many great memories for his friends when they saw so much of his football memorabilia on display, his family will have many proud memories of him. Our deepest sympathy is extended to John’s wife, Maureen, to his daughters Pamela and Olivia, sons Sean, Brian, Michael, Timothy, Eamonn and Niall, son-in-law John, daughters-in-law Carmel and Carol, grandchildren , brothers, sisters, relatives and wide circle of friends. In Iothlann De go gcastar sinn.
Many congratulations to Thomas Groarke, son of Breege and the late Thomas, Keel, Ballymahon who got married last month to Lisa Conway, daughter of Pat and Ann, O’Brien Bridge, Co Clare in St. Mary’s Church, Tang. The lovely wedding ceremony was celebrated by Fr. Gerry Murphy, Tang and Fr. Padraig McGowan, Ballymahon. Bridesmaids on the big day were Denise Groarke, sister of the Groom, Shirley Conway, sister of the Bride and Celine Conway, sister-in-law of the Bride, the ladies were looking very well dressed in light blue. Lisa looked stunning in her beautiful white gown. Her flower girls, also looking very pretty were Alicia Groarke, niece of the groom and her own niece, Emily Conway. Bestman was Declan Groarke, Thomas’s brother, with Groomsmen Jarleth O’Malley and Stephen Kenny, two of his friends. Thomas and Lisa together with their families and friends, many of whom travelled long distances, celebrated their marriage at Glasson Golf and Country Club where the dancing went on well into the night to the lively music of Busy Fingers and other artists. We hope Thomas and Lisa enjoyed their honeymoon in Switzerland and we wish the newly-weds many long years of good health and lots of happiness together.
