Sunday, December 2, was a very special day on the Ballymahon social calendar, when Ireland's top class brass band, 'The Garda Band' got the Christmas festivities off to a spectacular and joyful start in St Matthew's Church.

The band's performance coincided with the turning on of the Ballymahon Christmas lights, making it a truly magical day.

The event was organised to raise awareness of the facilities and opportunities that the Ballymahon Day Care Centre provides on a daily basis for the community and people travelling from further afield.

The centre was established in 2006 by a voluntary board of management who saw the demand for a service of its nature in the area.

The centre provides freshly cooked meals as well as a variety of activities such as exercise classes, arts and crafts, flower arranging and social dancing in addition to day trips throughout the year and much more.

Basil the therapy dog visits the centre every Tuesday morning and he is a welcome friend to all the clients.

The centre also provides an opportunity for people to meet new friends and it is an excellent social outlet.

Following the Garda Band concert, afternoon tea was held in the Day Care Centre, along with a raffle.

Numerous prizes were sponsored for the raffle by local businesses in the community.

This event, which was hugely successful, could not have been made possible without the help, support and generosity of the following people and businesses to whom Ballymahon Community Policing convey their sincere thanks:  Breda Greaves, volunteers and staff of Ballymahon Day Care Centre; Fr Liam Murray, Parish Priest of Ballymahon; Barry Conlon (Benetti Clothing); Bernie Hackett; Fiona Egan (Cloughan Farm); Gary Molloy; Kepak; Emmet and Gerard Finn (Maxol); Ollie Colgan Butcher; Catriona Claffey of Claffey's Clothes Shop; Pat Smyth (Supervalu); Gerry Ellis (Fresh Today); Francis and Nim Rodrigues (Excel Dental); David (Wilder & Gold); Angela Gray (Love is in the Hair); Ciaran O'Hanlon Pharmacy; Tom Sheerin and the Sheerin Family Band; Margo's Hair Salon; Halo Hair Salon; Fades & Flicks; Edward and Betty McGoey (The Rustic Inn); Andrew Nally; Orlaigh Proctor (Artist); Emily Cassells (Ballymahon Vocational School); PJ Diffley Hardware Store; Una Flynn Bakery; Michael and Derek Callopy (Kestrel Kitchens); Raj Singh (Apache Pizza); Jessica Greaves; Brian and Joan Madigan (Order of Malta); Seán Sorajan and Basil the therapy dog; Enda Sheehan; Conan Casey; The Garda Band.
