Maxi Zoo is celebrating ten years in Longford this Saturday afternoon with a big birthday bash that includes a rehoming event for ex-commercial hens in collaboration with Littlehill Animal Rescue.

The birthday bash will kick off from 12pm and will see face-painting, balloon-modelling and loads of other fun activities for all the family - and their four-legged friends.

The main event of the day, though will be the rehoming event for Littlehill's hens.

“Our stores in Naas & Maynooth have worked & fundraised with Littlehill animal sanctuary on numerous occasionsm,” said Nuala Doyle of Maxi Zoo Longford.

“But their latest campaign to rehome ex-commercial hens nationwide, has inspired myself and my team instore, to use our platform in the community to help and what better way to celebrate 10 years than helping these hens?”

Hens are extremely easy to look after and make really good pets, according to the folks in Littlehill Animal Rescue.

“Older people who might not be able for a dog tend to love them because they’re very friendly and they’re great company. They’re great little pets,” said Susan of Littlehill.

“And if you’ve got three hens in your garden, then you’re likely to have two lovely fresh eggs every morning - and you’ll know exactly where those eggs have come from.”

If you're interested in adopting a hen, you can visit the Littlehill Facebook page and send a private message.

Littlehill will look into each potential home to ensure the hens will be well looked after.

Facebook is the preferred contact method, but those who don't use Facebook can call 087 775 4399.

A €6 adoption fee will apply for each hen.
