Court hears Longford man accused of €8,400 theft took money ‘to repay a debt’

A case involving a defendant accused of the theft of over €8,000 from a bookmaker shop in Longford town where he worked almost two years ago will be heard next month.

Rhys Murphy Monaghan (25) of Cartons, Longford appeared in front of Judge Bernadette Owens at Longford District Court in relation to one charge of theft on December 2, 2023.

Sergeant Mark Mahon, court presenter, said the "offender offered to close Boylesports, sending the other employees home.

"He proceeded to take the day's cash from the store to the amount of €8,400, which was discovered the next day when the store was opened.

"The money was taken in order to repay a debt as he had been holding money for unknown persons which he spent.

"Following his arrest he made full admissions in relation to his actions."

The court heard all of the money was repaid to Boylesports and they did not incur any loss.

Mr Murphy Monaghan's solicitor requested 'full disclosure'  and the relevant documents and information from the prosecution.

Judge Owens asked Sgt Mahon how long it would take to receive those documents and after hearing it could be several days she decided to adjourn the case until October 21 next.
