A Longford man, who screamed and shouted and behaved aggressively at Longford Garda Station, has been given an opportunity by a judge and avoided the reactivation of a suspended prison sentence.

Dylan Greene (31) of 87 Springlawn, Longford pleaded guilty at the local district court to the public order offence on October 10, 2024.

Garda Sergeant Enda Daly, court presenter, outlined during a previous hearing that the defendant entered the public office in a confrontational manner on the day in question.

"He was screaming and shouting and aggressively stomping around throwing his arms in the air," he added.

The court heard Gardaí attempted to calm the man down, who was showing signs of increasingly aggressive behaviour, but those efforts were unsuccessful.

Sgt Daly said the "very uncooperative" defendant was arrested and later charged.

The court heard Mr Greene received a three and a half year prison sentence, which was suspended for five years in October, 2023, which if reactivated would lead to a mandatory prison sentence being imposed.

Solicitor Diarmuid Quinn said an updated probation report and welfare report had been compiled on his client and it was encouraging.

"There has been positive engagement from Mr Greene and there has been nothing ‘in terms of offending since the index offence in October 2024.

"The court and my client might benefit from dealing with it in a certain way but he has done very well."

Mr Quinn said Mr Greene had recently set up his own business and he was working hard in that new enterprise.

The court heard he had also recently been discharged from a medical unit where he had been receiving treatment and there had been positive recent developments in lots of aspects in his life.

Judge Bernadette Owens noted that if she convicted the defendant it would automatically result in a prison sentence being imposed but she declined to do that and she decided to give the defendant an opportunity and  the benefit of the Probation Act on this occasion.
