The current situation most hearing aid wearers face:

Difficulty communicating in background noise and hearing over distance is one of the most common
complaints of individuals with hearing loss. There are a number of factors that affect speech, including background noise level, distance from the speaker, acoustics of the environment and reverberation of music and other competing sounds.

Research indicates that despite significant improvements in digital hearing aid technology, most hearing aid technologies can only deliver approximately two metres of sound amplification to the wearer, in most communication situations.
