The recent Storm Éowyn will certainly be remembered in Longford and beyond for a long time by a lot of people for the destruction and resulting inconvenience to so many places and people.

Who would have thought that in 2025 households would be without power for almost two weeks?

It is hard to understand that this could happen in the modern world we have become accustomed to.

This is in no way a criticism of the crews and teams that have been working non-stop to try to repair the damage caused by the storm sometimes in very difficult and dangerous situations.

It is probably a reminder to us all that mother nature is more powerful than any man made invention.

The positives to be taken from this inconvenience is that people do rally around each other and help out where help is required – be that checking on old and housebound people to ensure that they have the necessary essentials to survive.

It also reminds us how we have all become so dependent on our mobile phones, smart devices, wifi etc. and how quickly this can all be rendered redundant.

We can be thankful that there were no major catastrophes or fatalities locally, and that the damage caused can eventually be repaired or replaced.

Looking ahead, it is hoped that those in positions of power will recognise the changing climate and take immediate action to ensure such hardships are not repeated.

Our infrastructure must be improved and adapted to better withstand extreme weather events, which are becoming more common due to climate change.
