A motorist who was detected with cannabis in his system has been convicted and disqualified from driving.
Dusan Jano of 15 Sandy Lane, Richmond Street, Longford pleaded guilty at the local district court to drug driving.
Sergeant Mark Mahon, court presenter, said Garda Denise Dockery was on duty when she stopped the defendant at a checkpoint in the Longford area at 11.20am and spoke to him.
The officer decided a short time later to carry out a roadside breath test, which the defendant failed and he was subsequently arrested.
A blood test was carried out at Longford Garda Station which was sent for analysis and the result showed it was positive for cannabis.
Mr Jano had no previous convictions.
Solicitor Bríd Mimnagh, defending, said her client is a carer for his mother and his two children.
The court heard Mr Jano is not in paid employment and he receives the carer's allowance.
Ms Mimnagh stated Mr Jano egretted his actions.
"He accepts he was wrong on this occasion," she added.
Judge Bernadette Owens decided to mpose a one year driving ban on the defendant and she fined him €500 with five months to pay.
