One of the 1,200 children who have benefited from the generosity of Longford people
A small gesture from Longford continues to make an impact 3,000 kilometres away. Little Steps for Ukraine is a project set up by Ukrainian mothers in Longford to bring joy to vulnerable children suffering in war ravaged Ukraine.
Made up of women from the Longford Ukrainian community and a few local volunteers, they have managed to send over 1,200 shoe box gifts to individual children in the war torn country.
The box contains sweets and some badly needed clothing and brings a tiny respite from the constant Russian bombardment of their homes, schools and hospitals.
Local volunteer Tiernan Dolan explained the concept: “The idea is simple. The donor fills a shoe box with little treats, like sweets, t-shirt, a soft toy, colouring books and crayons. The group in Longford, through their friends back at home, have lists of children who would dearly love to receive a surprise gift.”
Funded by Ukrainians living in Longford and donations from Longford people, the project has been a phenomenal success despite some setbacks.
Tiernan said Longford businesses have also backed the project: “A sincere thank you to the Longford McDonald's and Aldi who are supporting this cause as well as many generous local people.”
Earlier this year the local Ukrainian community marked the first anniversary of the Russian invasion with the “Justice for Ukraine” event which took place in St Mel’s Cathedral in February.
Organised by Alla Shmygovska, Tiernan Dolan, and John Farrell the evening featured music, dance, photography and art.
Longford has a good reputation among those who have been forced to flee that conflict in the last year.
“They feel very welcome in Longford,” Tiernan tells the Leader, “I've been told that many believe Longford is one of the most welcoming counties in Ireland, because of both the voluntary community workers and the Statutory bodies like Longford Community Resources and Longford County Council.”
Extending the hand of friendship was what the “Justice for Ukraine” evening was about: “It was an event to mark the passing of one year since the invasion of Ukraine. There was music, but there was a serious side to it as well.”
Little Steps for Ukraine is putting out an appeal for support this Christmas. Every cent counts, 100% of donations get to the children because there are no administration costs at all. Receipts for every single item bought are kept and everyone involved is an unpaid volunteer. If you'd like to support this project, contact Tiernan on 087 989 6269.
