Construction at St Josephs Care Centre
The start of a multi-million euro upgrade at St Joseph’s Care Centre campus on the Dublin Road in Longford town has been welcomed by General Election candidates, Deputy Joe Flaherty and Senator Micheál Carrigy.
The project by GEM Construction will provide a new state of the art 43 bed unit care facility over a 30 month build period and 'crucially', Deputy Flaherty commented, "the works will also include a 2nd palliative care bed for the county."
The Fianna Fáil TD welcomed the start of the work and also confirmed that plans for the refurbishment of the county clinic are also progressing.
He explained: “This will provide for the expansion of existing services including dental, orthodontic, MRHM and paediatric, gynae and surgical clinics. This aspect of the project is currently at appraisal stage but will be a significant step forward for local health care and all the time we continue working towards a minor injury unit for the county also on the St Joseph’s campus.”

Deputy Flaherty also provided an update on the planned primary care centre for Edgeworthstown and said that the HSE are finalising for the delivery of a primary care centre through a private developer.
In relation to the further healthcare projects in Co Longford, he said plans are also advancing for the replacement of the existing Ashford House support hostel for the community based care for mental health patients. Plans are in place for a new nine bed state of the art support hostel on a new site in Longford town.
Describing it as a significant investment in Longford’s healthcare infrastructure, Senator Carrigy remarked, “It is fantastic to see this critical work beginning and even more encouraging that local company, Gem Construction, has secured the contract. This not only marks a major step forward for healthcare in Longford but is also a great boost for our local economy and community."
Fine Gael Senator Carrigy also highlighted the unwavering efforts of Cllr Peggy Nolan, who has long championed the expansion of facilities at the centre.
“Cllr Nolan's advocacy has led to an increase in palliative care beds for Longford, ensuring that our community’s needs are better met,” he said.

The development includes a major 43-bed expansion, building on the multi-million euro refurbishment announced by then-Minister for Health Simon Harris TD in 2017.
Senator Carrigy emphasised that this investment strengthens the potential for further healthcare services to be established at the Dublin Road site, enhancing care and support for the entire community.
“This is a milestone for Longford’s healthcare services and a testament to what can be achieved through dedication and investment,” concluded Senator Carrigy.
