Longford mourns death of man who designed and built innovative turf cutting machinery

Late John Conlon, Breanriskcullew, Drumlish, Longford took great pride in his work and was always very reliable

It was with sadness that we heard of the death of John Conlon, Breanriskcullew, Drumlish which occurred on Tuesday, October 8, peacefully at Laurel Lodge Nursing Home.


His funeral mass was celebrated in St Mary's Church, Drumlish on Friday last, October 11 and he was laid to rest in Drumlish old cemetery.

John was very well connected to Gortletteragh parish through his turf cutting business.

Not only was he one of the first to introduce the new machine method of cutting to this part of the country after centuries of sleán cutting but he designed and built the huge machine himself.

John had great pride in his work and was always very reliable.


You could depend on him to deliver a good bank of solid turf to keep us happy over the long winter months.

We offer our condolences to his wife Una, sons Kevin and Aidan, daughter-in-law Siobhan, cherished grandchildren Helen, Sean, Ciara and Evan, sister Liz Lennon, nephews Pat, John and Joe, nieces Winifred, Elaine and Eilish, brothers-in-law Martin and Richard, sisters-in-law Mary and Eileen, cousins, extended family, neighbours and many friends.
