Strong criticism of illegal dumping incidents in scenic county Longford area

Newtownforbes Tidy Towns said there were two recent incidents of dumping on our beautiful walkway

There has been strong criticism of two illegal dumping incidents in a county Longford area in recent days.

Newtownforbes Tidy Towns was established with the aim of improving and maintaining the village environment to a high standard for the betterment of the local community.

However, two acts of illegal dumping were identified during the weekend and it caused disappointment and frustration

Newtownforbes Tidy Towns stated on their social media account on Saturday that the behaviour needs to be stamped out.

"These are just two photos of recent incidents of dumping on our beautiful walkway," they said. "Whoever is responsible for this disgusting behaviour needs to be brought to account."

The voluntary group stated indiscriminate dumping will attract vermin and this behaviour needs to be stopped.

Anyone with information has been asked to contact any member of the Tidy Towns Committee or Longford Co Co Environmental Dept.

Local authority litter wardens and Gardaí can issue on-the-spot fines of €150 for littering.

If the matter proceeds to the district court and a conviction is secured a judge can impose fines of up to €4,000.
