The late John Naughten has been remembered as an 'exceptional and skilled politician' by his Roscommon Council Council colleague, Tarmonbarry-based Cllr Tom Crosby.

Cllr Crosby stated, "I received the heartbreaking and shocking news a couple of hours after John's passing on Friday evening. I was attending a Mass in Frenchpark for our colleague and John's party colleague, the late John Connor, former TD, Senator, and Councillor, when the tragic news of John's death emerged.

"Being the longest-serving member of Roscommon County Council, I have known John since his first election when he filled the position on the County Council previously held by his brother Denis, who was then elected a TD for Roscommon Longford.
"John and I shared a close friendship over the past two decades. He was an exceptional and skilled politician, widely admired by all parties and independence, the council's executive, and staff.
"John played a crucial role as the Fine Gael representative in the negotiations for the new council in June. Working alongside myself and councillors John Keogh of Fianna Fáil, Laurence Fallon, and Emer Kelly from the Independent group, we crafted the Council's strategy for the next five years. It was our plan to fully support John Naughten's election as Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council in the upcoming June election.
"John's remarkable electoral success over the past five council elections and his recent nomination to represent Fine Gael in the upcoming general election endorsed what an exceptional and dedicated public servant he was.
"I extend my deepest condolences to John's wife, Breda, his daughters Emma, Leah, and Orlaith, his mother Mary, his brother Denis, and all his family members.
"May John's gentle soul rest in peace."
