Court hears Longford man intends to  ‘straighten up and do something with himself’

Defendant charged with public intoxication and threatening and abusive behaviour

A young man who pleaded guilty to two public order charges intends to “straighten up and do something with himself”.



John Kelly (19) of 7 Cluain Ard, Ardnacassa, Longford was before the court stemming from an incident on January 1, 2024 at Main Street, Ballymahon.


Mr Kelly was charged with public intoxication and threatening and abusive behaviour.

Sergeant Enda Daly said Gardaí received a call regarding a disturbance at a public house in Ballymahon.


Sgt Daly said Mr Kelly had threatened bar staff and patrons and was causing a disturbance. The defendant was arrested and brought to the Garda station, where he apologised for his behaviour.

Mr Kelly had two previous convictions, one for public intoxication the other for possession of drugs.


Solicitor John Quinn said his client stopped drinking and was “endeavouring to stay sober”.


Mr Quinn spoke of the defendant's regret about his conduct on the day, saying Mr Kelly is hoping “to put it behind him” and “get employment and straighten up and do something with himself”.

Having considered the details Judge Bernadette Owens imposed a fine of €250 for the threatening and abusive offence, and took the other charge into consideration.
