A motorist, who had been drinking and was caught by Gardaí with no licence or insurance, has been disqualified for two years.
Adrian May of Hardwood, Kinnegad, Westmeath pleaded guilty at Longford District Court to charges of drink driving and driving without documentation at the Aldi car park in Longford town on February 12, 2024.
Sergeant Enda Daly said Gardaí were alerted by a complainant shortly after 2am that a motorist was crossing over the white line on the Killashee Rd area.
Gardaí arrived and observed Mr May in the vehicle crossing over the white line about 20 minutes later and then turning right into Aldi car park.
The driver came to a stop and Mr May was asked by officers to provide his driving licence, but he said he did not have one with him.
Sgt Daly said Mr May's speech was slurred, he had glassy eyes and he was arrested on suspicion of being intoxicated.
A subsequent blood test gave a reading of 39mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood.
The legal limit is 35mg.
The court presenter told Judge Bernadette Owens the defendant had four previous convictions, including one for driving without insurance.
Solicitor Brid Mimnagh said her client pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity, he has no access to a car and he is actively seeking work and he is in a stable relationship.
"He is staying out of trouble, he very much has the support of his family and friends and he has applied for his theory test," she added.
Judge Bernadette Owens disqualified May for two years and fined him €800 with nine months to pay.
