Local community saddened by death of successful businessman who had a keen interest in flying

The Late Eamonn Fagan, Killakeen, Kilnaleck, Cavan

The funeral took place on Monday last, September 2, following requiem mass in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Mullahoran of Eamonn Fagan, Killykeen, Kilnaleck.

Eamonn passed away peacefully in the exceptional care of the staff at Blackwater House, Monaghan surrounded by his devoted family on Saturday, August 31.

Eamonn was the youngest of ten children of James and Margaret Fagan, Publicans, Kilcogy. He attended the local national school there and later the Technical School in Granard.

He emigrated to England in the late 1960’s and here his technical education came to the fore when he took up construction work in London where he was regarded as a very diligent worker. On June 24, 1972 Eamonn married the love of his life Maureen Gaffney in Mountnugent church and in 1976 they came home and built their lovely home in Killykeen.

Being an industrious man he had the foresight to set up his own business in aluminium and uPVC which was very much in demand at the time in construction. His business was very successful making windows, doors and conservatories which he ran for many years.

Eamonn also had a keen interest in flying and at his funeral symbols presented included an aviation headset, a wooden airplane crafted by his son Emmett and a certificate awarded to him after he completed a sky-dive on his 60th birthday, symbolising his love of adventure. He also loved a game of darts in the local pubs while enjoying a pint with his neighbours and friends and discussing the affairs of the day.

Eamonn’s real passion in life was his wife and family whom he adored and cherished. Tragically in January 1997 Eamonn and Maureen’s only son Emmett was killed in a car crash which was a severe blow to the whole family. Sadly, life was never the same for Eamonn afterwards as the special bond he had with his son was now broken. Eamonn was also predeceased by his parents James and Margaret, brothers Micsin, Willie, Joe, and Jim, sisters Babs, Lil and Sheila.

In later years Eamonn experienced ill health, particularly in the last twelve months and like everything else in his life he fought to the bitter end sadly taking his last breath on August 31.

Eamonn’s remains reposed in his home on Sunday afternoon where large crowds came to pay their respects to a true entrepreneur and a gentleman.

During his life Eamonn took a keen interest in all parish activities especially GAA where four of his grandsons currently play for our underage teams and a Guard of Honour from the Club met his remains as they arrived at the church on Monday morning where once again a large congregation attended for the mass offered by Fr Joe McGrath. Burial followed to family plot in the local graveyard alongside his beloved Emmett. May his soul rest in peace.

We extend our sincere sympathy to his beloved wife Maureen, his daughters Tara (Pete), Orla and Leanne (Connie), cherished grandchildren Kyle, Emma, Emmett, Diarmuid, Daire and Ultan,  brother Sean and sister Mary Agnes brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and a large circle of friends.
