Autism Innovation Strategy Launch Minister of State for Disability Anne Rabbitte with An Taoiseach Simon Harris and Minister for Equality Roderic O'Gorman and Senator Micheál Carrigy former Chair of
A Government strategy to address the challenges and barriers faced by autistic people while fostering an understanding of autism within society has just been unveiled.
The launch of the Autism Innovation Strategy has been welcomed by Senator Michael Carrigy.
Senator Carrigy, who is the former Chair of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism, said the strategy was a key component of the Fine Gael programme for government.
The strategy is to be implemented over an 18-month period with each of the 83 actions assigned an owner. With tasks given to a specific department or agency that will be undertaken across Government to better support autistic people and their families.
It aims to complement and enhance wider actions on disability by focusing on areas where there are unique needs for autistic individuals.
Senator Carrigy said: “I am proud to have been involved in the development of this important strategy, particularly in my capacity as the former Chair of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism.
“The Autism Innovation Strategy represents a significant step forward in our commitment to improving the lives of everyone with a disability. By addressing the unique challenges faced by autistic people, we are not only ensuring that their needs are met, but we are also fostering a more inclusive and understanding society for all.”
The strategy is structured around four key pillars:
1 Autism-Affirming Society: Promoting a positive, affirming approach to autism, encouraging acceptance and understanding throughout society.
2 Equality of Access to Public Services: Ensuring autistic people have equal access to public services, breaking down barriers that may prevent full participation.
3 Accessible, Inclusive Communities: Building communities that are accessible and inclusive, tailored to meet the needs of autistic individuals.
4 Building Capacity: Enhancing the ability of organisations, communities, and public services to effectively support autistic people through targeted training and resources.
The development of the Autism Innovation Strategy involved extensive public consultation, capturing the views of autistic people, their families, and the professionals and organisations that support them. Special attention was given to reaching underrepresented groups, including children and non-speaking, or minimally speaking autistic individuals, to ensure a comprehensive and inclusive approach.
Senator Carrigy concluded, “This strategy will make a meaningful difference in the lives of autistic people and their families. It reflects our commitment to creating a society that is inclusive, supportive, and affirming for all individuals, regardless of their abilities.”
