The GOAL Mile, which took place in Longford town on Christmas morning, exceeded all expectations by raising over €5,000.

“Well over 100 people took part,” the event’s organiser, Tiernan Dolan, told the Longford Leader. “We raised almost €5,500, which was way beyond our expectations.

“The money we raised will be used by GOAL to aid in the typhoon relief operation in The Philippines.”

Many locals now see the GOAL Mile as an integral part of their festive activities.

“This is one of the longest-running GOAL Mile events in the country,” Mr Dolan explained. “It’s been held for almost 20 years at this stage, and it’s looked upon as a tradition by many, with some people saying that Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without it.”

The success of the GOAL Mile provided the perfect end to an impressive year of fundraising for the charity in Co Longford.

“It has been an incredible year for GOAL locally,” Mr Dolan said. “We also had an overwhelming response to our Reek Challenge, which raised funds to build a school for children in Calcutta.

“Many people in Longford are struggling right now but they came up trumps again in supporting those who are less fortunate. It’s humbling.”
