Blow to hospitality sector in Longford with closure of Coffee House 45

'We have done our best over the past 12 months to try and ride the wave of the increasing costs of energy, food supplies, vat rates'

There was a blow to the local hospitality sector in Longford town last week, with the closure of a popular Dublin Street business.

Coffee House 45 shut its doors on Saturday last. It was managed by Rooskey native Eimear Reynolds, who is also a well known singer.

In a post on social media, Ms Reynolds cited the growing costs of running a business as being a factor behind the decision.

“As is the case with many small businesses we have done our best over the past 12 months to try and ride the wave of the increasing costs of energy, food supplies, vat rates etc. However, it is no longer possible for us to do so,” Ms Reynolds posted.

“We are so grateful to our loyal customers who have continuously supported us over the past five years and stuck with us even through the challenges that came our way! Our customers became our friends and we will be forever grateful for your kindness and support always,” she added.

She went on to say that it was a “difficult decision” to make to close the doors.

“On a personal note I would like to thank the wonderful team of girls who worked so hard and always greeted everyone with a welcoming smile. I can honestly say I have enjoyed every minute of working alongside you and I know our customers will miss the friendly and homely space you offered to them on a daily basis.”

“This has been a very difficult decision to make but it is the right decision for us right now,” Ms Reynolds added.

The closure of Coffee House 45 came in a week when the Government announced new supports for small businesses.

The Government is set to introduce a new targeted enterprise support package to help retail and hospitality businesses hit hard by higher costs.

It will be funded by tapping unused monies in a €257m business support scheme. That allowed businesses to claim 50% of last year's rates bill up to €10,000, giving business owners a maximum grant of €5,000.
