Road map for the future of the Lough Ree power station needed

Lanesboro based Cllr Ger Farrell tabled two motions highlighting issues in relation to the departure of the ESB and Bord na Móna from the town at the May monthly meeting.

In the first of those motions, Cllr Farrell asked that the council seek a meeting with the ESB “to set out a road map for the future of the Lough Ree power station.”

“The power station is now closed for five years. There has been no movement by the ESB in relation to its use. Meanwhile, in Shannonbridge, millions of euros have been spent on the former power station there. The power station is very important for Lanesboro,” he stated.

Cathaoirleach Colm Murray stated that a letter will issue to the ESB on the matter.
Cllr Farrell also submitted a motion on the possible uses for the now derelict Mount Dillon workshop and office space.
“This facility has great potential to become an apprenticeship college and must be kept within the community,” his motion stated.

“The potential for these facilities is massive. The sky's the limit,” Cllr Farrell told the meeting.
It was agreed the council would seek a meeting with Bord na Móna to discuss future plans for the Mount Dillon site.
