Moves are afoot to place a decorative feature commemorating the harbour of the Royal Canal in Longford town.
However, members of Longford Town Council were told at a recent meeting that although representations had been made to Waterways Ireland to open the spur of the Royal Canal to Longford Town the project was not on their agenda at present.
The issue was brought up in Town Clerk Dan Rooney’s report to members.
Mr Rooney told members that after the old swimming pool was demolished construction workers had opened a wall of the old canal harbour.
He said that the wall of the old harbour was in a good condition and that the staff had spoken to a local activist for the restoration of the harbour, Noel McGeeney, about the site.
Mr Rooney said that the harbour is about three metres deep and that as such is too dangerous to leave open. He said that a GPS survey has been conducted on the area and that there is a proposal in place to develop it as a feature.
Cllr Peggy Nolan led tributes to Mayor, Cllr Paul Connell for his commitment to the project and his efforts to bring Waterways Ireland on board.
