Anthony Reynolds who represented Longford in the senior class at the National Ploughing Championships
It was a successful week for Longford competitors at the National Ploughing Championships in Ratheniska a couple of weeks ago, with five competitors coming home with silverware.
In the loy digging, Brian Casey from Drumlish came first in the Senior Loy. His wife Deirdre came second in the Junior Ladies Loy.
Brian said afterwards, “We were both delighted with the results and it was great also to see lots of silverware won at the National Ploughing by other Longford competitors.”
Sean Monaghan from Edgeworthstown came third in the intermediate class on Tuesday despite the challenging weather conditions. Also on Tuesday, Glen man Daniel Haughey came third in the U21 class. Daniel was well coached by Anthony Reynolds.
On the second day Anthony himself was ploughing in the senior class and ploughed well which qualified him for another competition on the last day.
Cynthia Geelan also achieved third place on Wednesday in the Farmerette Class.
Cynthia said, “It was great to get back competing at national level. My last time competing was in 2017 and I am delighted to bring back a bronze medal to Longford. The weather conditions for the day were good which was a bonus. It was great to catch up with some fellow ploughmen and plough women whom I have not seen for a while. Many thanks to Gerry Sheridan from Mayo who let me use his tractor and plough and helped me out on the day.
Special mention to my Dad and husband Mike who travelled down with him and supported me all day and also everyone who came out to the ploughing plot.”
Longford Ploughing Association secretary John Maye extended congratulations to all the ploughing competitors for representing the county so well at national level. “Despite the challenging conditions it’s great to see some silverware coming back to Longford,” he enthused.
