The Old Convent Building, Ballymahon is set to be brought back to life
Ballymahon Town Team has announced the appointment of Kenny Lyons Associates & Architects as the lead design consultants for their community regeneration project under the umbrella of Pobail Le Cheile.
The Ballymahon Pobail Le Cheile project, led by the Ballymahon Town Team and Longford County Council’s regeneration team, will see the rejuvenation of the old convent building, the old scouts den and retrospective works concerning the Dean Egan library and the widening of the adjacent roadway.
Almost €6 million (€5,991,916) was allocated for the Ballymahon Pobal le Cheile community hub project in April 2021 under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund (RRDF).
While an additional €672,883 was allocated to the project in October 2021 following an announcement by Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD.
This brings total RRDF funding for the Ballymahon project to €6,619,799, with the total cost estimated to be in the region of €7,405,332.
Speaking on behalf of Ballymahon Town Team Niall Dowler said, “This project will bring together and utilise a range of vacant buildings to facilitate a working model for an enhanced family support network, counselling services & provide a purpose built day care centre for the elderly. In addition to this we have also incorporated a working space for a remote working hub and a men’s shed facility in the old scouts den.”
Mr Dowler added, "This announcement, in conjunction with the official contract signing will allow for the various stakeholders to have their input into the design process to ensure that the needs of their individual services are met and catered for."
Mr Dowler said the project is one that Ballymahon Town Team have championed since its inception and they are pleased that it is moving to 'this exciting phase where much needed accommodation will be provided for both staff and service users'.
He added, "In addition, we would also like to extend our gratitude to the various people who have given us support throughout this process and in particular the staff of Longford County Council regeneration team for their assistance and help throughout the process."
