Public meeting called as fears grow Longford greyhound track to be used as site to house Ukrainian refugees

Closure of Longford Greyhound Track is "a very sad time" says Racing Manager

A public meeting will take place in Longford next week as fears mount government chiefs are eyeing up the county town's former greyhound track as a site to house dozens of Ukrainian refugees.

Independent Cllr Gerry Warnock is calling on as many people as possible to attend a public meeting next Thursday at PVs Red Room to discuss the proposed plans.

It comes after a recent meeting of Longford County Council revealed how Office of Public Works (OPW) officials had identified the seven acre site as its preferred option to construct up to 40 factory-made modular homes in which to house displaced refugees fleeing war-tor Ukraine.

In an attempt to raise awareness over the mooted plans, Cllr Warnock has, in recent days set up an online petition against the move, attracting close to 700 signatures in the process.

"We have heard both our Taoiseach and Tanaiste patronisingly talk down to local communities on this issue and dictate to them that they have no right to a veto in cases like this - I beg to differ," he said.

"The day that local communities are left out of the conversation, is the day that local democracy dies."

Cllr Warnock is hoping to have a number of guest speakers present on the night from various groups and key local stakeholders.

It all gets underway at 8pm next Thursday 8th December. To sign find out more about the petition, follow the link:
