There was profound shock locally following a suspected stabbing incident in Longford town on Monday afternoon which resulted in a man being airlifted to hospital.
The victim, who is in his 20s, sustained wounds to his ear and arm after he was allegedly assaulted in a car park just off Killashee Street at around 2pm.
He was later flown by air ambulance to St James' Hospital in Dublin for treatment to what have been described as serious but non-life threatening injuries.
At the time of writing, no arrests had been made though gardaí carried out a number of searches on Monday evening in a bid to further the investigation.
As part of their inquiry, gardaí have appealed for anyone who may have been in or around the retail park on Killashee Street between 1.30pm and 2.30pm to contact them.
They are also appealing to anyone who may have dashcam footage around that time to similarly come forward as this may help the investigation.
Gardaí have so far declined to comment on the precise nature behind Monday's incident.
The Leader understands, however, that the row may have stemmed from an internal family feud.
As the investigation continues, local people have expressed their shock and horror about the incident which occurred in the middle of the day in one of the town's busiest areas.
