Claims €4m regeneration boost will make Longford 'the place to be'

Jim Daly visit

Minister of State for Mental Health and Older People Jim Daly alongside Cllr Micheal Carrigy and representatives from Longford Community Resources at the Longford Arms Hotel last week.

A €4m government led investment aimed at underpining Longford's regeneration drive will go a long way towards making those aims a distinct reality.

They were the overriding sentiments expressed by a number of local politicians this week after Rural Affairs Minister Micheal Ring signed off on the announcement.

Approximately €2.8m was set aside towards the ongoing development of a Norman Heritage village at the recently opened Knights & Conquests Heritage & Visitor Centre in Granard.

Edgeworthstown also secured a seven figure sum, accruing close to €1.2m as part of its own regeneration drive.

The funding provides for streetscape works and the continued development of the town's new €2.4m library.

“It demonstrates the confidence Fine Gael has in Longford,” said Cllr Micheál Carrigy, soon after news surrounding the investment broke.

“It also shows the work that has been put in by Longford County Council and its members.”
Local Cllr PJ Reilly said the fact almost €3m was being allocated to the Granard Motte project underlined the belief there was behind the project.

“It's a huge amount of money and great credit must go to the hardworking committee that's in place there,” he said.

Cathaoirleach Cllr Luie McEntire said the funding would make a “significant and sustainable impact” in both Granard and Edgeworthstown.

Paddy Mahon, Chief Executive, was equally enthused, saying: "Investment in these towns will help build resilience and make them vibrant places for families to live and visit and for businesses to invest in. We will continue to work closely with our communities to make Longford the place to be."
