It was during the course of the search that gardaí uncovered a substantial haul of cannabis herb.

Gardaí have said the find formed part of an intelligence led operation targeting a west Dublin organised crime gang and involved gardaí from the Garda National Drugs & Organised Crime Bureau and the Garda Special Crime Task Force.

It's not known where the drugs were being transported to when gardaí swooped with senior detectives keen to stress investigations into the find were ongoing.

A man in his 50s was arrested at the scene and was detained at Granard Garda Station under the provisions of Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996.

He later appeared at a sitting of Mullingar District Court in connection with the incident.
