Cllr Micheál Carrigy addressing delegates during the Fine Gael Árd Fheis last weekend.
Cllr Micheál Carrigy attended the Fine Gael Árd Fheis at the weekend where he spoke to delegates on a number of matters of both national and local importance.
He says he was invited by the Taoiseach, in his capacity as general election candidate in the Longford/Westmeath Constituency, to speak on the issues in an effort to raise more social awareness.
During the event Cllr Carrigy spoke about rent control funding for the Residential Tenancy Board; rent caps and the housing shortage.
“I spoke about the policies that have been introduced by the Government to regulate some of the issues for both tenants and landlords as well as the schemes that have been introduced to try and free up houses that could then become available for long term letting,” he added.
“I did some research on similar issues in Vancouver and how they were handled there and I pointed out at the Árd Fheis that since they introduced measures similar to our own last April 2,880 units have been made available.”
Cllr Carrigy went on to say that a lot of the forward planning by department officials in respect of residential development in Co Longford indicates that development can only take place in areas where there are adequate services.
“Over the last number of years we have seen Irish Water, for example, putting all the necessary water infrastructure in place; in fact they are placing new water lines in Ballinalee this week, but we are a very rural county that has a lot of farming going on and I do feel that if a person wants to build a house on their own land they should be allowed to do that,” the local area representative in the Granard Municipal District continued.
“We [council members] have made our feelings known on this matter at national level and there would be very little support for stopping the development of one-off housing in rural areas.”
He added, “I don’t envisage a general election next year - it could be 2020 at this stage - but the Taoiseach has indicated his wish for Fianna Fáil to step up now and confirm its commitment to the Confidence & Supply Agreement until at least the summer of 2020, so that says it all really as far as a general election is concerned.”
