Gardaí are appealing for the public’s help to track down two men who escaped on foot following a high speed chase in Longford town at the weekend.
The pair managed to give gardaí the slip by fleeing across fields in the Carrigglas area during the early hours of Sunday morning.
The incident unfolded shortly before 3am after gardaí had attempted to stop a green coloured Opel Astra that had been reported travelling at high speed along the town’s Main Street.
After the car failed to stop, a high speed chase ensued, taking in the Battery Road, Aughadegnan and Cloncoose before eventually coming to a halt in Carrigglas.
It’s understood both occupants of the car abandoned the vehicle and took to a nearby field as gardaí gave chase.
A Garda spokesman said the identities of both men have yet to be determined with the pair remaining at large.
“A high speed chase took place at Main Street in Longford town at 2:50am last Sunday (March 13) morning,” said the spokesperson.
“Attempts were made by gardaí to stop the vehicle resulting in a chase taking place.
“Gardaí later observed the vehicle at Carrigglas Manor and its occupants fled the scene on foot.”
It's understood the vehicle was not stolen but with no description of the two men being available, gardaí are appealing for the public's help as part of their investigation.
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact Longford Garda Station at (043) 33 50570.
