An Garda Síochána, Longford IFA, and the Longford local authority have this week reinforced their appeal to dog owners to keep pets away from sheep, especially during lambing season.

Dogs chasing sheep can force ewes to miscarry their lambs and even cause severe injury and death.

Both Longford County Council and An Garda Síochána have warned dog owners that they are legally responsible for any damage caused in the event of their dog chasing sheep, and could face prosecution, fines, and financial liability.

Ensure your dog is kept under control and not allowed to roam freely in rural areas. If you live near farmland where sheep are potentially in lamb, Gardaí have asked that you please ensure your dog cannot escape.
