IFA President Francie Gorman attended the launch of the 2026 ‘No Dogs Allowed’ campaign in Abbeyshrule recently
The Irish Farmers Association, including IFA President Francie Gorman, in partnership with Longford County Council and An Garda Síochána, were in Tenelick, Abbeyshrule recently to launch the 2026 ‘No Dogs Allowed’ campaign to highlight the dangers of uncontrolled dogs in rural areas.
Sheep worrying is a serious and ongoing problem, particularly during lambing season. Dogs chasing sheep can cause severe stress, injury, death, and can result in ewes aborting their lambs. Each year, farmers suffer significant financial loss and emotional distress as a result.
Dog owners are legally responsible for keeping their dogs under control. Owners can and will be prosecuted and held financially liable for any damage caused to livestock.
The aim of the ‘No Dogs Allowed’ initiative is to encourage people to engage in responsible dog ownership in rural areas by keeping their dogs under control.
Owners can, and will be prosecuted and held financially liable for damage to sheep or lambs.
Dogs chasing sheep can cause ewes to abort their lambs as they try to escape when chased by dogs.
Please do not allow your dog to roam freely in rural areas. As a dog owner you have responsibilities.
