A man in his 40's remains in a serious condition in Beaumont Hospital this morning following a collision between a car and a truck on the N4 Ballinalack yesterday afternoon.
The man, who was the driver of the car, was brought by air ambulance to Dublin's Mater Hospital but was subsequently transferred to Beaumont Hospital, where he currently remains in ICU.
A female passenger in the car, aged in her 50's, was brought to the Midlands Regional Hospital in Tullamore where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Emergency services attended the scene as Gardaí closed the road, diverting traffic through Ballynacarrigy where yesterday evening it was reported by road users that another crash had occurred.
Two further road traffic incidents are also believed to have occurred on another diversion route, namely the Lackan Road from Coole into Multyfarnham Village. Longford drivers reported the occurrence of a car crash on the route just outside the village in addition to a separate incident of a lorry becoming stuck at the nearby bridge.
The three incidents caused lengthy delays and tailbacks on the diversion routes in question, so much so, that drivers reported having no option but to turn around and find alternative routes.
Gardaí are today appealing for anyone who witnessed the Ballinalack collision - which occurred shortly after 1.30pm yesterday afternoon - to come forward.
Any road users who were travelling the N4 between Edgeworthstown and Mullingar between 1:15pm and 1:45pm yesterday and who may have dash-cam footage are asked to make it available to investigating Gardaí.
Please contact Mullingar Garda Station on 044 938 4000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or Longford Garda Station on 043 3350570
Gardaí say their investigations are ongoing.
