A tree planting ceremony to celebrate the cultural diversity of modern Longford took place beside Alderfield Estate in Longford town on Wednesday, April 3.

A mixture of native trees (Oak, Alder, Birch and Rowan) were planted by volunteers from the Roma, asylum seeker and Ukrainian communities together with local residents.

The event was organised by Longford Community Resources Social Inclusion Community Activation Programme (SICAP) in collaboration with Longford County Council and Alderfield Residents Association.

Many of the trees were donated by the campaigning organisation ‘Uplift’ in conjunction with ‘Future Forests, Cork’. Additional trees were provided by Longford County Council. The event was also assisted by Gary Brady (Climate Officer LCC), Adam Mulvihill (Biodiversity Officer LCC) and Brendan Farrell (Ardagh Landscaping).

Speaking at the event, Seán Regan, Social Inclusion Programmes Manager, Longford Community Resources, said, “The planting of these trees reflect the positive contribution being made by new communities to Longford and the importance of working together to address the Climate crisis facing us all.”

The SICAP Programme aims to reduce poverty and promote social inclusion and equality in Ireland through supporting communities and individuals using community development approaches, engagement and collaboration. The programme is funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development.
