Marauding dogs continue to wreak havoc for Longford farmers despite warnings

Marauding dogs continue to wreak havoc for Longford farmers despite warnings

This innocent lamb, only one week old, died on Saturday in Moydow, after being attacked by two local dogs

On Saturday last Longford IFA sheep representative Luke Casey found two dogs attacking his sheep at Moydow.

An upset Mr Casey told the ‘Longford Leader’, "It was extremely distressing to find one lamb only one week old, with severe injuries and see a flock of heavily pregnant sheep being chased."

He added, "It was very disheartening to witness yet another dog attack less than 24 hours after Longford County Council issued a warning to dog owners to take responsibility for their dogs."

Mr Casey revealed that the dog warden and Gardai were actively investigating an attack on sheep at a neighbouring farm just 24 hours earlier when he had to call them back again.

"It is a very poor reflection on some dog owners in the Moydow area that this is allowed to happen day after day. Roaming free every dog can be a killer,” warned Mr Casey.

He added, “These attacks leave all sheep farmers very concerned about the welfare of sheep during pregnancy as the trauma of a dog chase can cause stillbirths, weak newborns and infant lamb deaths for months after the attack.”

Longford IFA is appealing to all dog owners to ensure their dogs are always under control. Garda records show over 3,000 unnecessary sheep deaths are investigated each year so the reality is that dog owners are just not keeping their dogs in.

Longford IFA advised, “Please make a special effort to keep your dog far away from sheep during the lambing season. Ensure your dog cannot wander or escape from home under any circumstances.”

A spokesperson for Longford County Council stated, “Dog owners are reminded that it is their responsibility to keep their animals under appropriate control at all times or face a fine or prosecution if their dog is found to be involved in livestock worrying.”

The reminder was issued on Friday evening following a reported incident of sheep worrying in the Moydow area where one lamb is missing and another injured.

The spokesperson added, “The Longford County Council Dog Warden will pursue the matter in consultation with An Garda Síochána. Longford County Council is highlighting this matter to encourage livestock owners to be extra vigilant.

“Please contact Longford County Council Environment Department to report any incidents of stray dogs on 043 334 34 62.”
