Roscommon and Longford mourns passing of much loved and respected Eileen Keenan

Late Eileen Keenan (née McDonald), Tarmonbarry Village, Tarmonbarry, Roscommon / Tarmonbarry, Longford

The new year brought a sense of sadness and nostalgia around the parish of Tarmonbarry and beyond, as news spread on Tuesday, January 2, 2024 of the passing of one of the parish's most loved and respected citizens Eileen Keenan.

Aged 97, Eileen Keenan (nee McDonald) passed to her eternal reward peacefully in the loving care of the staff in Autumn Lodge, St Joseph's Care Centre Longford surrounded by her loving family after a long and full life.

Born and reared in the village, Eileen and her late husband Joe ran the original Keenan's Riverside Inn for many years, growing a solid business and reputation that has been built on by Barry & Annette into the Keenan's of Tarmonbarry that we are familiar with today.

Eileen was well known by young and old for her friendly manner, her style and for the interest she took in the affairs of young and old in the locality.

Until relatively recently, Eileen was always up for the chat while having a cuppa or a bit of lunch in the bar in Keenan's, and she took great pride in the developments around her home village and in the family business over the years.

We at St Barry's GAA extend our sympathies to her sons Nicholas and Barry, her daughter Sr Nora, daughters in law Annette and Evelyn, to Eileen's eight grandsons Shane, David, Peter, Joey, Conor, Breen, Niall and John and her great grandchildren, and to her wide circle of neighbours and friends.

Eileen's quiet presence in and around the village will be missed by many.
