A remarkable tale of symmetry that recounted how one of the workers on the restoration of St Mel's Cathedral was posted on a popular Longford social media page.

“The December sun shone brightly for local girl Maria Dunne whose fairytale marriage to Eoin Finneran, Roscommon took place in St Mel's cathedral, Longford,” the Humans of Longford Facebook page posted.

Maria was the Gem Purcell Health & Safety officer in the cathedral during what was the largest restoration work of its type in Western Europe from September 2012 to December 2014.

At times during the cathedral's restoration following the fire, Maria was responsible for the safety of up to 120 workers.

The Humans... post continued: “Always in good humour, she was ever present in her hard hat and hi vis jacket making sure everyone was safe and well looked after. Maria is probably the only lady who has climbed right up to the cross on top of the cathedral, checking every nut and bolt on the massive and complicated scaffolding.”

The post speculated: “So maybe, it was a 'Thank You' to Maria from the Lord above that the sun shone brightly from a clear blue sky this winter's morning as she stepped from her horse drawn carriage - a proper Princess Maria, far removed from her helmet and hi vis.”

It concluded: “Heartiest congratulations Maria and Eoin, wishing you both health and happiness for the rest of your lives together.”
