Longford man believes he was picked on by other parties

Longford man believes he was picked on by other parties

A man was roaring at a number of males who had upset him earlier at a family funeral.

Following the incident, Justin Curran (30), Bracklin Road, Edgeworthstown appeared before the recent sitting of Longford District Court where he was charged with engaging in threatening and abusive words or behaviour and intoxication at Main Street, Edgeworthstown on November 18 last.

Garda Sergeant Enda Daly, for the State, said gardaí had received a report of a row and called to the scene.

The defendant was seen shouting and roaring and had his hands raised towards some men.

Gardaí had to get assistance from a garda patrol car to bring the defendant to Longford Garda Station.

The court heard the defendant had 11 previous convictions, but none for public order.

Defence solicitor Brid Mimnagh said the defendant had been at a “traditional family funeral” where there were toasts to an elderly man.

However, a family row had broken out. “He believes he was picked on by other parties,” Ms Mimnagh said.

The defendant is a father of three and works 3 or 4 days per week to support them. He earns €3-400 per week.

As the defendant had no previous convictions for public order, Judge Bernadette Owens said she would not record a conviction if the defendant made a contribution of €350 to the court poor box. Ms Mimnagh said he would need some time after Christmas to come up with the sum.

The case was adjourned to February 20, 2024.
