Granard's Knights and Conquests Heritage Centre has been congratulated following their success at the National Heritage Council Awards.
The centre got a runner up nod in the Inclusive Event category. This was awarded to an event or project that made a special effort to share heritage with everyone in the community across age groups, including those who are; new to heritage; those who do not have local roots; those who have additional accessibility needs.
The annual National Heritage Week Awards celebrate the most engaging projects and events organised by National Heritage Week organisers.
The Knights and Conquests entry, Dúchas Beo, was a community gathering in celebration of the rich and diverse living heritage.
The experience brought history to life with live medieval reenactment on horseback by the Horsemen of Éire.
Those who attended got to meet the blacksmith, Ross from Foraged Nature as he shared the knowledge of his craft. The arts of thatching, weaving and building a roundhouse were also on display.
The day was a celebration of all heritage crafts and trades, including coopering, recognising the town's historical link with barrel making.
There was also a Leonardo da Vinci cart design that was built in Granard. Also on display was a wonderful display of tools and crafts from olden days on display at Knights and Conquests Heritage Centre as well as workshops and demonstrations.
Director of Services Barbara Heslin commended Knights and Conquests Heritage Centre on their success: “This is a really fantastic achievement to get such national recognition for the centre.”
Councillors were unanimous as they congratulated the heritage centre on the success.
