Longford County Council roads department are to take action to address problems with road markings at “one of the busiest junctions” in Longford.
Councillor Gerry Hagan called on Longford MD to reinstate the road markings at Kiernan’s Forge, Ballinalee Rd,
Cllr Hagan said: “The continuous white line and stop signs at the crossroads are in a very dangerous state at the moment. They are non-existent, because they are totally worn away. You can't see any lines at the junction. It is one of the busiest junctions in our county, a lot of lorries come from Cavan on the road. There are accidents waiting to happen on a minute-by-minute basis.”
Backing the motion Cllr Peggy Nolan and Cllr John Brown said the absence of marking was a potential road hazard at the busy intersection.
In replying to the motion Senior Engineer Eamon Bennett said a new stop sign was already installed and the road signs were recently re-installed at the site, and an application has been made for a low cost saving scheme at the junction.
Mr Bennett said the continuous white line would also be reinstated as soon as a contractor was appointed: “Obviously we need a dry week before that work is commenced.”
Cllr Hagan also raised the issue of flooding at the junction at Cullyfad crossroads beside church, describing it as “very dangerous” particularly when there has been frost.
Mr Bennett said the matter was being addressed by the council: “Our staff will conclude the junction at Cullyfad Church in the drainage programme if we have funding available at the end of the year. We will do our best to prioritise it.”
