Signage diverting HGVs from Longford town centre is a positive development for the county town, a local representative said at a recent Longford Municipal District meeting.
Cllr Seamus Butler welcomed the report that Transport Infrastructure Ireland were in the process of erecting the signage indicating that there is restricted access for HGVs to Longford town centre. Earlier this month Transport Infrastructure Ireland signed off on the change and it's hoped signage will be erected by the end of December.
Cllr Butler believes this is a positive move in improving the experience of shoppers in the town centre, and has mooted further improvements like making Longford town centre more pedestrian friendly.
At the November meeting of the authority, Cllr Butler spoke of the announcement: “It's to be welcomed, but it has been a long haul,” he quipped.
Cllr Butler said: “Hopefully this will reduce the amount of pointless truck traffic through the town.”
