Longford County Council has confirmed that construction of the highly anticipated Longford Skate Park development will be completed this week.

The project, which will be open to the public for use from next week, involved the transformation  of the former Longford Greyhound Track into a vibrant community amenity, fostering active  leisure and community spirit.

The park was developed by contractors Browne Brothers Sire Services with support from Volcano  Skateparks, in partnership with Longford County Council.

The total project cost was €449,833.37,  with 90% grant funding provided under the Department of Rural and Community Development  under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme 2022.

The development of Longford Skate Park started with a significant undertaking by Longford County  Council, guided by the driving force and vision of the Longford Skatepark Committee in conjunction with Longford Community Resources Limited, to create an inclusive recreational space  benefitting residents and visitors alike.

An official opening of Longford Skate Park is being planned by the local authority to celebrate this  momentous milestone.

Cathaoirleach Colm Murray, speaking on behalf of Longford County Council, expressed  excitement, saying, "The Longford Skate Park is a testament to the commitment of Longford  County Council to creating vibrant, active spaces for our community. It will not only be a hub for  skaters but a great place for friends and families to come together, socialize, and enjoy the great  outdoors."

Chief Executive of Longford County Council Paddy Mahon added, “Longford County Council  welcomes this initiative, led by and developed for the local community. Linking this type of  amenity into the pre-existing Royal Canal Greenway will add wonderful value to the tourism  offering of Longford town.”

The Longford Skate Park will not only be a source of recreation but also a safe and exciting  platform for local talent and aspiring athletes to hone their skills, encouraging physical activity and  social interaction among community members.
