A husband told his wife "this will be the last dance we will have" moments after punching her in the face and standing on her foot during a drink fuelled row, it has been alleged.

Forty-three-year-old Guntis Jekabsons, of 70 Mostrim Oaks, Edgeworthstown, Co Longford appeared at a sitting of Longford District Court today charged with assaulting his wife, causing her harm at the above mentioned address on March 13 2023.

The court was told that despite attempts by the alleged injured party to withdraw her complaint, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had sought to proceed with the case.

Sgt Mark Mahon, for the prosecution, said both parties had been drinking and dancing prior to the alleged incident taking place.

He said it will be the State's case that Mr Jekabsons allegedly punched his wife in the face before standing on her foot and telling her: "This will be the last dance we will have."

Sgt Mahon said following the alleged section 3 assault, Mr Jekabsons' wife awoke the following morning with a black eye and sore foot.

No medical report was handed in, however the court was furnished with photographs showing the alleged injuries sustained by the victim.

Defence solicitor Bríd Mimnagh said the State's case at this juncture was purely based on allegations made against her client.

Mr Jekabsons did not speak and gave no indication as to what way he intends pleading.

Judge Bernadette Owens accepted jurisdiction, meaning the case can be disposed of in the District Court.

She remanded Mr Jekabsons on bail to a sitting of Longford District Court on March 5, 2024.
