A Longford man is to stand trial after allegedly being found with over €27,000 in the proceeds of crime.

Thirty-five-year-old Martin McDonagh, of 2 Congress Terrace, Longford, was served with a book of evidence at last week's sitting of Longford District Court.

Garda Colin Goldrick gave evidence of having served the book, which the court was told contained five charges, prior to last Tuesday's court sitting.

Alongside the money laundering charge, Mr McDonagh was also charged with the possession of cannabis and cocaine for sale and supply as well as two counts of section 3 possession of both aforementioned drugs.

Mr McDonagh, who was wearing a black jacket and blue jeans, did not speak throughout the course of the hearing.

Sgt Enda Daly, for the State, said the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had given consent for Mr McDonagh to be sent forward for trial to the next sessions of Longford Circuit Criminal Court on October 3.

In defence, solicitor Bríd Mimnagh applied for both a junior and senior counsel to be appointed to Mr McDonagh's defence team due to the seriousness of the charges against the accused.

Judge Bernadette Owens granted that request before giving him the alibi warning, advising him to inform the State solicitor's office within 14 days should he intend to rely on an alibi during the course of his trial.

Mr McDonagh was consequently remanded on continuing bail to appear back before Longford Circuit Criminal Court yesterday (Tuesday).
