A Dublin homeowner is raffling the apartment she has lived in for 17 years for just six euro.
Karen Sugden, who is planning a move to France in the new year, decided to list her one-bed apartment on the UK raffle platform, Raffall, to give someone a chance to buy a mortgage-free home.
Karen, who moved to Ireland from the UK on April Fool's Day 20 years ago, says, "I would just love for someone to live mortgage-free.
"It's a lovely way to get a place. In Ireland it's a little bit crazy to buy, even to rent [somewhere]. I'm moving to Paris in January so instead of the normal way I thought I'd give this raffle a go and see."
Although she admits she has entered similar raffles herself over the years - without any luck - Karen says she's "optimistic" that someone will win her apartment by the time the draw comes to an end on November 6.
She says, "Absolutely anyone can enter."
Participants pay the price of a pint to be in with a chance to win the first floor apartment, which is located close to Heuston Station and comes with a parking space.
She says, "I thought six euro - or five pound, as it's a site in the UK - is a decent price, it's not too ridiculous a price to pay. Hopefully most people have got a few euro spare.
"It's a bit more accessible to people. I've spoken to people trying to get on the housing ladder, and in Ireland it works a bit differently, you have to keep bidding up. With this it's a bit of a luck thing, it's open to everybody.
"Everyone has the same amount of luck."
Stamp duty and legal fees will be fully covered by Karen, with any future homeowner required to pay standard yearly management fees going forward (approximately €1,300).
She says, "Literally the person just gets the keys, and I'm leaving it fully furnished."
Although she has sold nearly 24,000 tickets so far, she needs approximately 45,000 more in order to break even.
However, if the target is not reached by the time the draw closes, a lucky winner will receive 75% of the sum total raised, with 25% going to Raffall for hosting the campaign.
A local charity in the Liberties, Little Flower Penny Dinners, also stands to benefit.
However, Karen says she would prefer for someone to win the apartment.
She says, "I like to remain optimistic. I error on the side of positivity that it is going to work out fine, that on the 6th of November the draw will go ahead regardless.
"I'd rather someone have an apartment than a lump sum of money, although I think obviously lots of money would help someone as well. For me, I want the apartment to go to someone.
"I would feel far happier if someone got this for six euro, than going the usual route with someone saddled with a great mortgage hanging over them.
"But a lump sum of money could change someone’s life as well."
Despite an overall positive response, she says there have been challenges.
She says, "Of course there's people saying it’s just a scam, but I want to put people’s minds at rest. This is a genuine thing, I want people to win this place for six euro."
When she first listed the apartment to be raffled, Karen explains she felt "a bit hesitant" to put the word out there, but now describes herself as "bold as brass".
Although she says social media isn't her strong suit, she's doing what she can "to get the word out there".
She has even put up posters at her mechanics and has considered handing out leaflets on the street.
An eternal optimist, she says, "You have to do what you have to do."
