HIQA inspectors have praised the level of care provided at a Longford residential centre

A Longford designated centre for people with disabilities has received a near flawless report from health watchdog chiefs.

Longford Centre 2, which is a residential service run by the Muiriosa Foundation, was given a largely positive overview by HIQA officials following an announced inspection on June 7, 2023.

It ruled the local facility to be compliant or substantially compliant in all bar one out of 20 regulatory areas.

The only criteria inspectors found fault with was in medicines and pharmaceutical services where “unexplained discrepancies” were found in the stock of some medications.

Despite inspectors noting the “unkempt appearance” of the building's curtilage, the premises was found to be clean, homely, nicely decorated and furnished” for the two residents it houses.

Upon the day of the inspection, a family member of one resident happened to be visiting who said they were “very happy” with the service being provided.

“They said that the staff team do a variety of activities with the resident,” the report highlighted.

“The family members lived locally to the centre, and were regular visitors, and stated they were always made welcomed.

“They also said that they would be very comfortable to approach staff if they had a complaint or a suggestion.”

The report referenced the “clear management structure” that was in place, exemplary staff training protocols which were in operation as well as a wide and diverse nutritional plan which had been put in operation.

“Overall, although improvements were required in the upkeep of the outside of the premises, and some improvements were required in medication management, the resident was supported to have a good quality of life, and to have their choices respected, and their specific needs met.
