A father-to-be who notched up his second drug driving conviction will spend the next two years off the road.
Deivydas Liubinskas (27) of 41 Beechgrove Lawns, Monaghan, Co Monaghan pleaded guilty to driving with excess cannabis on Monday, December 27, 2021.
Sergeant Mark Mahon outlined details of the incident. The sergeant said officers on patrol at 12:15pm at Gaigue Cross, Ballinamuck, Longford stopped a vehicle that had no NCT.
When speaking to the driver, Mr Liubinskas, they noted that his eyes were glassy and his speech slurred.
The defendant was taken to Longford Garda Station where a blood test proved positive for cannabis. Sgt Mahon said the defendant had three previous convictions. One prior conviction was for drug driving from Cavan District Court, another was for careless driving.
Mr Liubinskas' solicitor said he was a Lithuanian national who has lived in Ireland for six years. The legal representative said that all of the offences Mr Liubinskas came before the court happened at around the same time. She said her client is now in a stable relationship and his partner is expecting their first child.
The solicitor said Mr Liubinskas lost his job as a welder when he received his driving ban for his previous drug driving conviction. She said the defendant has abstained from alcohol and cannabis for over 12 months.
Taking the facts of the case into consideration Judge Bernadette Owens registered a conviction and imposed a fine of €350 with five months to pay and a two year disqualification. Legal aid was granted.
