Longford councillor seeks talks with church bosses over insurance concerns

Local church leaders are coming under pressure to hold talks with local politicians over fears a State backed funding scheme could be put beyond the reach of schools as a consequence of spiralling insurance costs.

It comes after concerns were raised last week at how insurance giant Allianz, who are the chief insurer for Irish schools, told education chiefs playgrounds located on school grounds place “significant exposure” on the property owner once they are opened to public use.

Those soundings prompted Cllr Paul Ross to call for a meeting with senior church officials on foot of advice to schools who have availed of CLÁR funding to increase their insurance cover to ensure such facilities are adequately covered.

Cllr Ross explained that as a member of the board of management of his local school in which a sensory garden was completed this year he was extremely alarmed to learn that schools would be unable to apply for CLÁR funding in the future due to the insurance issue.

But in correspondence sent directly to Cllr Ross By Allianz read out by the Fine Gael councillor, he said that he was satisfied with the response received from Allianz who were unequivocal in their commitment to offer insurance to CLÁR funded projects in schools.

The letter stated: 'I would like to reassure you that Allianz do provide our education customers with insurance cover for publicly available facilities, and there are no restrictions to this cover for such use.

“I want to also reassure you of our commitment to continuing to support communities such as the ones you represent, and we are happy to provide clarification to any school in your constituency that may be seeking insurance cover in relation to CLÁR funding.

“Ensuring the appropriate insurance cover is in place is important for any property owner or the operator of any facility, particularly those that are open to the public.”

In light of this letter received from Allianz Cllr Ross sought an amendment to his motion to seek a meeting with the members of the St Mel’s Diocese Trust and representatives from Rural Affairs Minister Heather Humphreys’ department in relation to their concerns with CLÁR funded schemes in a bid to allow schools to apply for CLÁR schemes in the future.
