Longford man jailed for two months over three theft offences

A defendant who pleaded guilty to three Section 4 thefts was handed down a two month custodial sentence at Longford District Court by Judge Patricia Cronin.

Peter Jones (38) of St Martha's Hostel, Knockahaw, Dublin Road was before the court in respect of three theft charges.

The charges against the defendant were that on June 28 2023 at Dunnes Stores Athlone he stole clothes value at €460, on June 29 at Aldi Golden island shopping centre he stole an air bed and cosmetics valued at €46.12 and on July 1 2023 at TK Maxx Athlone Town Centre stole beauty products valued at €278.

Sergeant Mark Mahon outlined to the court details of the offences the defendant was charged with. Sgt Mahon said on June 28 last Mr Jones was in the company of a female when they went into Dunnes Stores. The two people filled a bag with Paul Costello clothes and left the premises without paying.

With regard to the offence on June 29 the defendant held open an entrance door at the Athlone town centre Aldi while a female went in and took a number of items then exited through the entry door.

The offence on July 1 happened when Mr Jones and a female entered the TK Maxx store and took a number of beauty items, then left the store past all points of payment without paying for the goods.

Sgt Mahon said the prosecution had CCTV footage in all the matters.

The defendant was arrested at a later date and made admissions of the theft. The court was told Mr Jones had 12 previous convictions and has been in custody since August 5 on an unrelated matter.

Judge Cronin imposed a sentence of two months on the first offence and took the other two into consideration. The judge backdated the sentence to August 5.
