Gardaí hunt hoax bomb caller behind closure of Longford shopping outlets

Hoax bomb caller

Gardaí are looking for a hoax caller behind bomb threats made at both Longford Shopping Centre and Dunnes Stores yesterday

Gardaí have launched a major investigation into establishing the identity of an individual who is suspected of making a number of hoax bomb threats that yesterday resulted in the evacuation of Longford Shopping Centre and a major supermarket in the county town.

The Leader can reveal gardaí received two phone calls to its Battery Road headquarters yesterday afternoon that coincided in the instantaneous closure of both the shopping centre and Dunnes Stores facility on the Dublin Road.

Both locations were sealed off for around eight hours yesterday afternoon and evening, resulting in lengthy delays into and out of the county town.

The car parks at both locations were also sealed off as gardaí awaited the arrival of army bomb disposal specialists to carry out an extensive examination of both scenes.

The Leader can reveal no devices were found at either location with the two shopping outlets being deemed safe at around midnight last night.

A garda spokesperson has this morning confirmed that two separate calls were made to Longford garda station yesterday, warning of devices being left at both scenes.

Detectives are now trying to establish the identity of the alleged hoax caller and have launched a public appeal for information.

Longford Shopping Centre and Dunnes Stores evacuated amid major security alert

Longford Shopping Centre and a supermarket is closed off this evening on foot of a major security scare, the Leader has learned.

"Two calls were reported to Longford Gardaí on the afternoon of Saturday 12th August 2023 regarding suspicious devices, a number of retail premises were cleared and scenes preserved in Longford town.

"Gardaí liaised with specialist search resources and the Irish Defence Forces as well as management of these retail premises.

"A number of searches were conducted and no devices were located.  The locations were deemed safe.

"As a result, Gardaí are now treating the call received as a hoax and investigations into all the circumstances of this call are ongoing.

"Gardaí would appeal to anyone with information in relation to these calls to contact Gardaí at Longford Garda Station on 043 335 0570 the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station."
